Back End Developer

Itison is looking for a talented software developer to work on our Ruby on Rails applications. 

Based distributed/remotely in the UK, or within one of our offices in Glasgow or Edinburgh, this role will see you working within the seven person Development team to improve our existing products and develop new services.

The teams' focus is which processes thousands of transactions every day and helps businesses across the UK reach our users. We also develop a suite of back-office tools for the rest of the company and REST API for our mobile apps.

We aim to produce high-quality, tested code for our product. Developers are expected to take ownership of projects from planning through to implementation and launch.


  • Adding new features and services to excite our customers and grow our company.
  • Maintaining our internal and external applications
  • Advocate for best practices within the team and our stack
  • Participate in code review
  • Solve issues for staff and customers that present technical challenges

 What we're looking for:

  • Real-world experience with Ruby/Rails or a similar toolkit
  • Experience working on an e-commerce site or similar
  • Experience with GNU/Linux based server administration
  • Experience with common stablemates of Rails such as Nginx, MySQL, Redis, Elastic, etc.
  • Ability to efficiently manage your own time and work without close supervision

 Bonus skills:

  • Experience with devops – particularly Chef
  • Experience of AWS
  • An interest in Swift
  • A track record of working on a distributed team

This position is open to anyone based in the UK, either working distributed or from our head office in Glasgow city centre.

The Development team consists of four Ruby and two Front-end developers plus one DevOp who wrangles our servers.  We do stand-ups and use automated testing, but couldn't claim to work to a specific methodology like Agile or XP.  We aim for an open, grown-up culture where everyone has an equal voice in decisions. We use Rails 5/6, MySQL, Redis and Elastic on top of Ubuntu servers, we like Rspec, Travis, CodeClimate and Github.

 We're a company of around 70 people based across the UK, mostly in our Glasgow head office.

The Joel Test is a twelve-question measure of the quality of a software team: we score about 10 out of 12.

The interview process consists of an initial 15-20 minute call, a home coding exercise, and then two interviews at our Glasgow office with the team and the CEO.
